Cardinals Region 8 Tournament stops short of State berth
The Washburn-Wilton-Center Stanton Cardinals put together one of their strongest stretches of baseball at the most important point of the season, battling their way to two opening day victories and finishing among the final teams standing at the Class B Region 8 Baseball Tournament.
Competing against a difficult regional field, the Cardinals showcased strong pitching, timely hitting, and resilient defense throughout four postseason games before their tournament run ended Thursday, May 21.
Head coach Cyril Nagurski said the team’s effort and growth throughout the tournament reflected the progress the program made over the course of the season.
“We beat the 1 seed and won two games on the opening day to set us up for great success heading into the rest of the tourney,” Nagurski said. “We gave a relentless effort which is all we can ask for from our group. We played hard.”
The Cardinals opened tournament play Tuesday, May 19 against Hettinger/Scranton/New England and earned a hard-fought 5-3 victory.
