Cardinals sink Pirates in opener

The last team to bare the Washburn Cardinal football name took to the field this season tasked with sending the Cardinal nickname out with a bang. They didn’t waste any time showing that they are more than capable of that task in their first game of the year on Friday against the Kidder County Pirates. Washburn kept it mostly a ground affair, attempting 25 runs for a total of 207 yards, but a pair of deep strikes through the air also led to easy points on their way to a 36-14 victory. Taking control early in the first quarter, the Cardinals marched down the field and then called up Evan Eberle’s number for a four-yard pickup delivery into the end zone. Later in the same quarter, quarterback Jeff Rasmussen sent a pass to wide receiver Monty Johnson who proceeded to outrun any and all defenders for the 77-yard touchdown. Kidder County’s attempts at answering Washburn’s early surge were in vain, only threatening to break on to the scoreboard once in the first half before turning the ball over.
