The Washburn Cardinals made a statement last week beating Harvey at home and then heading to Linton and beating the ranked Lions on their home court. The Cardinals had dropped the previous two in a row to Standing Rock and Hazen and were looking to get back on track before the district tournament. Friday they took on Harvey, who has had a bit of a rough season so far coming into the matchup at 7-10.

The Cardinals opened the first half slowly but got some help from sophomore Nolan Teigen hitting three 3-pointers in the half. Brian Fike had 13 in the first half for Harvey and went five for five from the line. Payton Granger also had 10 and the Hornets had a four-point lead at halftime. The second half the Cardinals woke up led by seniors Zach Schell and Caleb Weisgarber. Schell scored 12 while Weisgarber had 10. Washburn battled their way to their twelfth win of the season 63-54.

The next night the Cardinals traveled to sixth-ranked Linton-HMB Lions. The Lions were coming off a tough loss to second-ranked Shiloh Christian the previous game 52-48. Washburn has been playing well against ranked teams this season, but hadn’t yet been able to get over the hurdle of beating one of them. This game would be different.
