Cardinals turn focus toward postseason after regular season finale
The Washburn-Wilton- Center-Stanton Cardinals closed out their regular season schedule Tuesday night with an 8-1 loss to Mohall/Lansford/Sherwood, but despite the result, the Cardinals are now turning their full attention toward the start of postseason baseball.
WWCS will enter the Class B Region 8 Tournament as the No. 5 seed and is scheduled to open tournament play against topseeded Beulah as postseason action begins this week.
Head coach Cyril Nagurski said the team is ready to embrace the opportunity that comes with tournament baseball.
“The regular season is behind us now the fun season begins,” Nagurski said. “All that matters is we are going in the right direction at the right time and we are excited to see what our group can do in tourney time.”
Mohall/Lansford/Sherwood wasted little time taking control of Tuesday’s matchup, putting together a big opening inning that immediately placed the Cardinals in an early deficit.
MLS plated five runs in the top of the first inning behind a combination of timely hitting and aggressive offensive pressure. The visitors collected several early hits and forced the Cardinals to play from behind almost immediately.
WWCS struggled to generate momentum offensively in the opening innings as MLS starter pitching kept the Cardinals lineup off balance. Through the first three innings, Washburn-Wilton-Center-Stanton
was limited to only one hit while Mohall/Lansford/Sherwood continued adding to its lead.
