After receiving a first round buy, the Washburn boys basketball team was eager to get on the court Saturday night and begin their quest for another district tournament title. The Underwood Comets would fall to the Max Cossacks the night before in a close game 57-54.

Washburn opened the game strong with good defense and solid team rebounding to limit possessions for the Cossacks. The Cardinals shot 52 percent in the first half and 50 percent from three-point land. They took the lead into halftime at 31-13.

The second half was more of the same as the cool and steady Cardinals went to work handling their business on offense and defense. They would out-rebound the Cossacks 24 to 37, also doubling the assist count 14-7. Nick Thompson had a solid performance for the Cossacks scoring 17 with seven boards. Jack Zimmerman had 14 to lead the Cardinals. Washburn beat Max handedly 61-29

The Cardinals advanced to the championship game to face the third seeded TLMM Trojans who beat Wilton-Wing on Saturday. Washburn beat Turtle Lake earlier in the season 52-31 at home.
