Cards crumble in defensive meltdown

Washburn’s 38-31 halftime edge over Central McLean proved to be fool’s gold for the Red and White, as they failed to stop multiple Cougars from filling the bucket in the second half of their 74-59 home loss.
The Jan. 5 showdown began in fine fashion for the Cardinals, with spirited performances from Karter Hansen (23 points) and Alex Frederick (16 points).
Wh i le H a n s en wa s punishing the opposition with his customary backto- the-basket bag of tricks, Frederick injected the team with a shot of adrenaline with two first-quarter steals that were converted into points. The junior’s hustle didn’t go unnoticed by coach Jeff Brandt.
