Cougars Too Much For Cards Again

The postseason has come and gone for the Washburn High School volleyball team. That also means the entire 2022 season is over. Washburn began their Region 5 Tournament run with a play-in game victory over Standing Rock 3-0 at home. The Cardinals then traveled to New Salem on Monday night for a quarterfinal matchup against Central McLean. It was the second time in seven days
that the Cardinals and Cougars would face off. Central McLean pulled through for another 3-0 win over Washburn. In the first set of the
quarterfinal match, the two teams were level almost all the way through. Central McLean made a run late and took the opening game 25-21. Despite falling early on, Washburn was playing well enough to suggest they might come back. The second set was not the comeback. The Cardinals had too many mistakes to hang with the number two seed in the region. Washburn was in a bad spot down two sets, but
the match was still not over. The Cardinals didn’t get much help from Central McLean errors, they just played good volleyball in set three.
Neither squad could get a big lead, but it was Washburn with the advantage for most of the game. Similar to the regular season meeting the Monday before, the Cougars finished strong by evaporating the lead Washburn had and put the Cards away with a 25-21 win.
