Exploring the beauty in your backyard in a rental

By Robyn Rohde, BHG News Service

For the last 20 years Sandy McKay has been fortunate enough to have a front row seat to daily viewing of the Missouri River. From her summer place near Lake Sakakawea, the Stanton native has spent her life exploring the wonders of North Dakota’s beautiful river valley sites and gorgeous lakes. Beginning just over a month ago, McKay began to take serious steps toward sharing her passion with others. Teaming up with her sister-in-law Becky Skalsky, they jointly own Missouri River Kayak Rentals that operates out of both Stanton and Bismarck locations. The two share more than just a family connection, however, as both are teachers and have been kayaking for several years. Skalsky is a reading specialist for the Bismarck Schools and McKay is a paraprofessional in the Hazen Public Schools. Ever since purchasing their own kayaks three to four years ago, the pair have envisioned sharing that experience with others. Discussing her desire with her sister-in-law and their spouses helped the business become a reality this summer. "All your worries are gone. Life is good," McKay said of the experience of floating down the longest river in the United States. "I want to bring people around here and show them the beauty that we have. It’s gorgeous."
