Southern McLean’s Kate Fox ran away with the state championship title of the Class B division of the State Cross Country Meet Saturday in Grand Forks, and is on her way to being named the state’s top senior cross country athlete.

The Roughrider girls placed fourth as a team with 212 points, behind Hillsboro-Central Valley, Bowman County and Watford City, while the boys finished in ninth place with 411 points.

Southern McLean’s Fox, a senior, led the pack throughout the race, finally pulling away from Sargent Central-Lidgerwood’s Peyton Frolek and Hillsboro-Central Valley’s Reagan Baesler in the last 400 meters.

"Reagan and Payton were on her shoulder the whole race," noted Roughrider coach Laura Tweeten. "She was hoping to lose them a little bit sooner than she did, but when she got to the last 400, she took off and they were behind her.

"She ran a great race. It was awesome," added Tweeten.

Fox knew she could run a good race on the Grand Forks course, having outrun the state’s top contender Cailee Peterson of May-Port. In Grand Forks, she ran even better, running another personal record on the course.
