Lady Cardinals start off the season with two wins

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

The start of the Washburn girls basketball season was a bit delayed thanks to some not-so-pleasant weather, but the team finally kicked their year off last Tuesday at home against the Minot Bishop Ryan Lions. A big scoring night from Cardinal player Spanky Clayton helped Washburn build a lead and fend off any Lion runs later in the game. Never trailing in the game, the Cardinals finished well ahead with the 63-49 score. "Bishop Ryan has a nice team this year and came into our game 2-0 on the season," said Washburn Head Coach Keith Jacobson. It was Washburn’s defense that started things off and enabled them to get a fast start. A couple of steals by senior Samantha Schell resulted in transition layups by quickly dishing the ball up court.
