The Washburn Cardinals girls’ basketball team hosted a tough and physical Flasher Bulldogs team Saturday night on their home court. The holiday break provided the Cardinals a chance to heal up from some lagging injuries from volleyball, but the vacation was not enough.

The opening tip was controlled by the Cardinals and Abby Tweeten scored quickly for Washburn on a put-back on a rebound. The Bulldogs had an answer from their senior leader Secora Schmidt with a layup of her own to even the score at two. The teams both came out a little slow throughout the first quarter and Flasher led Washburn 13-10 after quarter one.

In the second quarter, Schmidt heated up, sparking an 8-2 run that made the Cardinals call Timeout midway through the second. The Cardinals came out of the timeout and Carly Freeman and Mandy Schell each came up with a steal, but offensively, the Cardinals were converting with the shot-blocking prowess of the Bulldogs. Offensive rebounds for the Bulldogs and put-backs helped them go into halftime with a 35-24 lead.
