Lady Miners ready to compete

By Brenda L. Shelkey

The opening game for the Lady Miner season is Dec. 4 at the McLean County Tournament in Wilton. The first night of tournament play, the Miners are up against the Turtle Lake-Mercer Trojans. Head Coach Lisa Jenkins said, "We open up with Turtle Lake and I think that’s a good draw for us. I’m a little worried about their inside game. They’ve got Bayless and Sondrol. She’s a tall, lanky girl who shoots the ball well. I think we’ll be able to put a little pressure on them this year. We’ll see." Last year the Miners didn’t have any seniors to step up and take the leadership role. This year, Jenkins asserts that she is no longer willing to use the excuse that they are a young team. She doesn’t want her team to see themselves in that light any more. "When we were finally able to break a press last year, we weren’t able to get into an offense," said Jenkins. "We were still frazzled from the press. But we had a good summer. The girls were in the gym all summer long." She is depending on their growth and maturity over the summer to shine through.
