Lady Miners take consolation championship at WHS tourney

By Adam Thomas

It was another weekend and another volleyball invitational for teams to gather and inadvertently hit volleyballs at spectators seated along the ends of the tightly-packed courts. This time Washburn played host to an eight-team soiree. As with other tournaments, the teams started off the day with pool play, the results of which determined the seeding in the bracket round. Washburn emerged fourth out of Pool A and played the dominant Harvey Hornets, the first team out of Pool B. Harvey would prove to me a little more than the Cardinals could handle, taking the game 2-0. The Cardinals moved on to play the Underwood Comets in the consolation round. Washburn contested the Comets until the very end, but a strong front row attack from Underwood would be the deciding factor, earning them a slim victory 2-1, which eliminated the Cardinals from the tournament. Junior Candy Ankenbauer led the Cardinals in kills for the tournament with 17 and also in blocks with 10. Senior Alexis Meier topped the charts with 11 digs and 6 aces.
