Miners navigate illness and tough road tests ahead of Districts

The Wilton-Wing Miners girls basketball team endured a challenging stretch last week, facing two of the top teams in Division B while dealing with roster limitations caused by illness.
Despite the setbacks, the Miners continued to compete and now turn their focus toward regaining health and preparing for the upcoming district tournament.
Wilton-Wing opened the week on the road Jan. 26, traveling to Central McLean and falling 72-43 to the Cougars.
Playing shorthanded, the Miners battled early but struggled to keep pace as the game progressed.
Sophia Krush led Wilton-Wing with 18 points, consistently attacking the basket and providing off ensive energy.
Tessa Miller added nine points, while Lydia Hetzenbiler scored seven. Harper Willett fi nished with four points, Bree Benning had three, and Marissa Hruby chipped in two.
Central McLean used defensive pressure and transition scoring to create separation,
forcing Wilton-Wing to work through crowded half court possessions.
The Miners continued to compete, but depth and fatigue became factors as the game wore on.
Head coach Lisa Jenkins said illness has made preparation diffi cult in recent weeks.
“We have had infl uenza A running wild in our team,” Jenkins said. “We were down two starters in the Central McLean game, and we had nine kids out of practice the Tuesday before we played Washburn.”
