Miners out in first round of regionals

By Adam Thomas

The Wilton-Wing Miners ended their regular season in good shape for the district tournament. Seeded second in the district, they arrived in Turtle Lake in a good position to make a run deep into the post-season. The Miners defeated Underwood in their first round game to ensure their ticket to the regional tournament, but would end up falling to Turtle Lake-Mercer in the district championship. They went on to face a tough New Salem-Almont team in regionals that wound up ending their season three sets to zero in the first round. Starting off the district tournament, the Miners once again faced off against the Underwood Comets, a team they have faced more than a handful of times over the course of the volleyball season. Underwood won the first encounter, but it was Wilton-Wing that has had the most success, winning every time after the first. Their dominance would continue with this game, but things would be a lot closer than they have previously been. The widest margin was in the first set with Wilton-Wing’s Samantha St. Claire and Alanna Smith taking charge with some very impressive offensive and defensive plays on the ball. The set would be an easy take for the Miners, 25-18.
