Miners rally past Cardinals in five sets
Wilton-Wing rallied from a 1-2 defi cit to pull out a 3-2 victory over Washburn on “Pink Night” (in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month), Oct. 21, in Washburn.
The match did not count against the District 8 standings, and Washburn defeated Wilton-Wing, 3-2 (21-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-18, 15-11), in the District 8 match, played Sept. 23, in Wilton. The Miners improved to 13-14-1 overall, while the Cardinals fell to 12-10.
Washburn (6-3 in District 8), will be the fourth seed in the District 8 Tournament, which tips off Oct. 30, at Underwood High School. The Cardinals will open the tournament against fi fth-seeded Garrison in the second match (approximately 4:30 p.m.).
Wilton-Wing (4-5 in District 8) will be the sixth seed in the District 8 Tournament, and the Miners will open up against third-seeded New Salem-Almont in the fi nal match of the quarterfi nal round (approximately 7:30).
WW led most of the way in the opening set after grabbing a 5-4 lead on a block by Sophia Krush, and later, Harper Willett’s kill extended the lead to 15-10. The Miners continued to hold the lead, and Stella Rust’s volley into the corner gave WW seven set points (24-17). An error by WW on the ensuing serve kept Washburn alive, and then the Cardinals scored four straight points behind the serving of Brooklyn Hetletved to slice the deficit to 24-22. However, the Cardinals committed an error on a return after the next serve to give WW a 25-22 victory.
