Miners rebound with strong tournament showing
The Wilton-Wing Miners bounced back from a pair of difficult matches by putting together an impressive run at the Center-Stanton Tournament Saturday, Sept. 12.
Wilton-Wing won five of its six tournament matches, sweeping each of its five defeated opponents in two sets.
The performance came after the Miners dropped matches to Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter and Flasher earlier in the week.
Head coach Heidi Wiesgarber said the Miners’ determination and growing belief in one another helped them navigate a busy stretch of competition.
“Their confidence and grit have really pulled them through,” Wiesgarber said.
“They want to do well more than I’ve ever seen and are working together as a team.”
Wilton-Wing opened the week Tuesday, Sept. 8, with a tightly contested home match against Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter. The Miners pushed Napoleon-G-S through five sets before coming up just short in a 3-2 loss.
Two nights later, Wilton-Wing traveled to face Flasher, one of the early leaders in Region 4 and District 8. The Bulldogs protected their home court and defeated the Miners in three sets, 3-0.
Rather than allowing the two losses to linger, Wilton-Wing responded with a strong showing Saturday at Center-Stanton.
