Off to a great start: Cardinals finish second at McLean County Tourney

By Danielle Abbott

The Washburn girls basketball season began on Nov. 17 and after a little more than 2 weeks, the girls were off and running into the season. Their opening game paired the Cardinals against Flasher. After a short break from coaching at Washburn, head coach Keith Jacobson returned this year, and led his girls into a powerful season opener. "I thought the girls played well considering it was the first game of the year. They played hard and tried to work on the things we wanted them to," Jacobson said. The first game went well for the Cardinals, and they beat out Flasher with an ending score of 36-24. Senior Jennifer Wicklander led the team with 11 points, and senior Kelcie Beckman was the second leading scorer with nine points. Following their win against Flasher, Jacobson had only one day to prep the team before once again taking them on the road. This time, their destination was Wilton for the three-day McLean County Tournament. Beginning on Thursday, Washburn was paired up in the third game of the night, facing off against Max. Within the first minutes of the game, it was obvious that this would be a scrappy and well-played game.
