Regional fourth place for Wilton-Wing Miners

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

It was a promising opening for the Wilton-Wing Miners at the regional tournament. The team shot well and pulled out an exciting win against the Solen-Cannonball Sioux in the first round on the first day of the Region 5 tournament. But when it came to their next couple of games, the Miners were unable to recreate that energy. In the second round, the Miners took a loss against the Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky Trojans 65-32 and then lost again on the final day to the New Salem Holsteins 62-75 to take fourth place standing. In their second round game against TL-M-M, the Miners showed bounce-back ability after the Trojans got off to a 8-0 run to start the game. Tanner Schalfman nailed a jumper off an inbounds pass, followed up by a layup by Andy Mokena and a big Dillon Loper three-point shot drew Wilton-Wing back into the game and into a manageable 10-7 end of the first quarter. But there would be no bouncing back from the offensive attack that the Trojans brought for the rest of the game. Despite hard work on the inside by Mokena and a couple of layups, TL-M-M took full advantage of the Miners’ turnovers, often ending in easy layups or three-pointers that sailed through the hoop.
