Riders fall just short of upset

Riders fall just short of upset

BY OWEN PATTERSON

The Southern McLean Roughriders took the field for the eighth time this year in rainy and smoky conditions. The Black and Gold came close, but were unable to upset the Skyhawks of Shiloh Christian.

Quarterback Alex Retterath got the game started with an 18-yard run. Southern McLean kept picking up yards and got all the way inside the Shiloh 30 before a penalty stalled the drive. Shiloh
answered by introducing Michael Fagerland to the Roughriders. The sophomore running back ripped off a 40-yard run to set up the Skyhawks in scoring position. A few plays later, Fagerland scored from six yards out and Shiloh was ahead 7-0.

After that, the first quarter went by pretty quickly. Retterath would throw another interception, but Shiloh didn’t score any points. The only highlight of the second quarter was a trick play that saw wide receiver Tyler Kulzer lob a pass to Alex Retterath and gain 41 yards. However, time expired before the next play and the teams went to half in a 7-0 ball game.
