The 2022 high school football season kicked off across North Dakota Friday evening, including in Washburn. The Southern McLean Roughriders took the field rocking their new threads against the South Prairie/Max Royals in the season-opener. Despite a number of unfortunate events, the Roughriders still came away with the 26-6 victory. The action started well for Southern McLean, forcing a
three-and-out and immediately moving the ball back down the field. Sophomore running back DonTaye Fetzer had two long carries to set up the Roughriders on the threeyard line. Things took a turn after Fetzer coughed up the handoff and South Prairie/Maxʻs Collin Knorr dove on top of the football, giving possession back to the Royals.
