Roughrider track hitting its stride

Two weeks away from the end of the track and field year, Southern McLean has loaded up their schedule with competitions to make up for the slow yearly season.
Closing out April, the Roughriders hosted their very first track meet as a program. The track meet was the first held in Washburn since the times of antiquity; it was made possible by a track surface replacement two years ago and lots of last minute preparations. "Hosting a meet takes a lot of work and we would like to thank everyone who came out and supported the opener meet by helping out," said Southern McLean Head Coach George Levey.
At the home meet, the Boys team took first place overall while the Girls team was edged out by Harvey/Wells County for the top spot.
The lone event champion for the boys was Zach Schell in the long jump, measuring out to 19 feet and 2 inches.
The girls on the other hand had a handful of top finishes. Foremost was Kate Fox taking first in the 3200m run with a state qualifying time of 12:04:34, becoming the first Southern McLean athlete to qualify for the state meet.
Other event champions for the girls at the Roughrider Meet were Kaitlyn Binstock in the triple jump with a jump of 32 feet 1 inch and McKenzie Thorson in high jump, making a 4-foot 11-inch leap.
