Roughriders drop fourth in a row

Roughriders drop fourth in a row

BY OWEN PATTERSON

When facing the number one team in the state, a win will not come easy. The Southern McLean Roughriders found that out just like the four other teams that the Beulah Miners have steamrolled in 2021. A 48-14 loss now makes every game remaining more and more necessary to win if the Roughriders want to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The game started well for Southern McLean. On the first drive, the Riders were able to pick up 17 yards on the ground before failing to convert on fourth down. Right after the Miners took over possession, the ball was ripped out of the runner’s arms and scooped up by the Roughrider defense. But they were unable to pick up a first down.

On Beulah’s second play, however, they stopped playing around. Senior running back Zayne Phelps took the reverse handoff and went 90 yards for the score. Amari Gilmore would score on the next drive to make it a 14-0 game.
