Roughriders fall to 1-2 after loss

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

It hasn’t been the kindest start of the season for the Southern McLean Roughriders, being on the road three straight games, but the team is coming home next weekend better knowledgeable about how to use their strengths and improve their weaknesses. But before they play in front of a friendly crowd this year, the Roughriders needed to get through the Richardton-Taylor-Hebron Raiders on Friday night. The game was entirely a first half affair as every point scored came before half-time. The teams traded touchdowns in both the first and second quarters, but it was the Raiders that continued scoring until the teams retreated for half-time. With no movement into the end zones for either team in the second half, R-T-H walked away with the 27-12 victory. It was the Raiders that scored first with an early touchdown on a 14-yard run in the first quarter, but Southern McLean responded with a score of their own with a short 2-yard run by Christian Thompson. However, the difference was in R-T-H kicking a successful extra point while Roughriders failing on the 2-point conversion, putting the Raiders up 7-6. Moving to the second quarter, R-T-H ran another ball in for six points plus another extra point, but Brett Schreiner received the resulting kick-off on the next play and proceeded to Usain Bolt it past all the Raider defenders 90-long yards for a touchdown, keeping the score close, 14-12.
