The Southern McLean Roughriders stayed in Washburn on Aug. 23 for the first game of the season against the South Prairie Royals. The Royals would have a slow start, and a turnover would put the Roughriders on the path for their first touchdown.
Looking to approach the endzone, the Roughriders began to make passes to advance. Strong running would lead to a pass to junior Devin Sailer, who would make the first touchdown of the evening. The point after run would not be made, ending the first quarter with a six point lead to the Roughriders.
Starting off the second quarter on offense, Southern McLean would not score, only making small gains before a turnover to the Royals. Again, South Prairie would not be able to score, quickly giving the ball to the Roughriders.
Multiple run attempts in a row would put the Roughriders in scoring position, but a penalty would set them back. An eventual run by senior Logan Schmitz would score the second touchdown for the Roughriders. A point after pass to junior Garrett Pfleiger would end successfully, adding another two points to the score. A fumble recovered by Southern McLean would turn over the ball to the Roughriders, and a 20 yard pass to junior Karter Hansen, followed by a 12 yard pass to Schmitz would result in another touchdown for the Roughriders. The point after would be no good.
