Southern McLean edged out the majority of their opponents over the last few meets, placing the top five for boys and girls.
The Roughriders fought amongst 18 teams at the Washburn invitational Friday, with the girls placing fifth and boys placing third. Both teams fell to Rugby which placed first in girls and second in boys, blowing away most of their competition by 100 or more points.
The Roughriders came out well across the board, getting a strong standing in both track and field events. Cody Blazek lead the boys at the meet, taking second in javelin, and qualifying for state with his first-place performance in the long jump.
Also on top was Dakota Harrison, who took first in shot put.
Rounding out the field events for the Roughriders, Ben Frederick took second in pole vault, Koby Hansen took third in high jump and eighth in long jump, Christian Gardener took fourth in pole vault, Ezra Vogle took fifth in pole vault, Tate Bartolotto took sixth in long jump and eighth in javelin and Coltan Hyttinen took eighth in pole vault.
On the track, Hyttinen fared well, taking second place in both the 1600 meter and the 3200 meter. He and teammates Tyler Dahme, Ben Frederick and Vogle took fourth in the 4x4 relay. Tyler Barnhardt took eighth in hurdles at the meet.
