Roughriders suffer first loss at Central McLean
The Southern McLean Roughriders suffered their first loss of the season in a matchup between two of Region 4’s leading teams.
Southern McLean traveled to face Central McLean Friday, Sept. 18, and came away on the losing end of a 30-22 decision. The result dropped the Roughriders to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in regional play.
Despite the eight-point loss, Southern McLean ead Coach Beau Eriksson praised the way his players continued competing regardless of the game situation.
“I think our guys gave a valiant effort throughout the entire game,” Eriksson said.
“Whether it was up or down on the scoreboard, they kept giving it their all. I was proud to see them surrender the outcome and work to be at their very best.”
The loss ended an unbeaten start that had carried Southern McLean through the opening four weeks of the season. It also tightened an already competitive Region 4 race as the schedule moved into its second half.
Central McLean improved to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the region with the victory, pulling even with Southern McLean in both categories.
Eriksson said the Roughriders must continue sharpening the basic areas of their game as they prepare for the remainder of the regional schedule.
“We have to continue to get better at the fundamentals, both on defense and offense,” Eriksson said.
“Whether it is blocking, tackling or other fundamentals, we have to see those continue to improve and not become a point of concern as the season goes on.”
