Schreiner passes 1,000 career points in double-header

Players for both Washburn and Underwood had to delay their Christmas vacations by a couple of hours on Friday with the teams meeting in Washburn for a night of double-header basketball. The Washburn girls played steady against a much more experienced Comet team, but couldn’t hold back Underwood’s scoring in the second half and ended up taking a loss 53-38. The hometown boys were rolling from the start, outclassing their opponents with a 51-31 win. The Lady Cardinals were playing in only their second game of the year and their last of 2012. Although Underwood came out scoring the game’s first five points, Kennedy Retterath and Mandy Schell found the basket after that and matched the Comets by the end of the first quarter, 9-9. They even held the lead at points through the second with Carly Freeman and Lexi Russell adding to the score sheet for Washburn, but quick back-to-back strikes just before the end of the half put Washburn trailing 21-18 going into halftime.
