Southern McLean gets Homecoming victory

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

Always the most anticipated game of the football season, the Southern McLean Roughriders not only wanted to win their Homecoming game for the extended fan base out to watch the big game, but they also needed a win to pull themselves out of a three game losing skid. To do it, they would have to face the New Salem-Glen Ullin Holsteins on a chilly Friday evening. The Roughrider defense had to come up big against the heavy running offense of the Holsteins and they preformed above reproach for the forty-eight minutes of game time. Thanks to them, the Southern McLean offense only needed two touchdowns to carry the day, 12-8. Through-out the season, Southern McLean has put together big plays on a number of their possessions, but their biggest problem has been turning those plays into touchdowns in the long run. The Roughriders had a couple of drives like that in their first quarter on Friday. On the team’s first possession, Zach Hruby moved the team down the field with a big break away run, but then Southern McLean struggled to move the ball any further forward until turning over the ball on downs with 8:20 on the clock.
