Southern McLean goes out on a win

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

It’s been an up and down year for the Southern McLean Roughrider football team, but with the sun setting on their 2012 season, the team was looking to go out on a high note in their last game of the year against the Standing Rock Warriors. You know it’s going to be a good night when you score in the first four seconds of the game and you didn’t even receive the opening kickoff. The Roughriders overwhelmed the Warriors all over the field on Friday night and the score board showed it, 52-8. The Southern McLean special teams placed an All-Madden caliber opening kickoff smack dab on the half-yard line, pinning Standing Rock inside their own end zone. They wouldn’t get much of a chance to move outside of it, however, as their first snap was fumbled and covered up by Zach Schell in the end zone for the touchdown four seconds into the game. Adding to the surprise, the team lined up for an extra point kick from the foot of Devin Hanson that sailed right through the uprights of the goal post to make it a very early 7-0.
