Third place for the Cardinals in districts

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

They didn’t make it look pretty, but they got it done. The Washburn Cardinals needed to get through the Garrison Troopers in a regional qualifying game on the final night of the district tournament to extend their season and the Troopers didn’t make it easy on them. Washburn started out well enough, with Retterath scoring the team’s first pair of baskets before Mandy Shell opened up from long range for a three pointer and a layup to cap it all off as the Cardinals were on top 11-4 at the end of the first quarter. Not only did the Cardinals lose their offensive drive in the second quarter, but they also lost close defensive containment on Garrison’s players. The combination allowed the Troopers to pull off a string of baskets that Washburn had no answer to. Kaden Schulte made the only second quarter field goal for the Cardinals, their other three points coming on the free throw line. But they still maintained a small edge going into halftime, 16-14.
