Back to back home games for the Washburn Girls basketball team began their season over the weekend as they faced off against the Kidder County Pirates and Rolla Bulldogs.

Although the Cardinals showed their ability to fight at times during both match-ups, their opponents were able to outscore Washburn’s weak shooting performances. Kidder County took the 41-28 win on Friday night while Saturday afternoon saw Rolla win big 62-27.

Although Kidder County finished the game with a 13 point victory, the majority of the night was much closer than the final score might have suggested.

Washburn met Kidder County blow for blow in the first quarter as Carly Freeman, Mandy Schell, and Kaden Schulte all marked their first points of the year to keep the game tied up 8-8.

Through the entire half the Cardinals put on a good defensive effort that held the Pirates mostly in check while the offensive side struggled to score field goals.
