Uniform colors debated

Frustrated with junior high basketball jerseys that aren’t official school colors, Washburn’s school board chairman questioned if the athletic director should be authorized to order uniforms.
At the start of last week’s Washburn School Board meeting, board chairman Rick Tweeten added a last-minute item to the agenda: Uniforms. Addressing the agenda item, Tweeten recounted a recent conversation, during which he was shown a photo of a girls basketball team donning black jerseys.
“There was a basketball game picture, and I said, ‘Who is that?’ and she said, ‘Washburn,’ and I said, ‘No, it’s not,” Tweeten said.
Tweeten said he was confused by the uniforms, which didn’t sport the school’s signature cardinal red or its other official color, white. Tweeten said he felt that the black uniforms are a waste of money, and that it makes him question the power given to the school’s athletic director.
