The area’s first of many volleyball tournaments took place this last weekend and it continued its tradition of being an incredibly large affair. Sixteen teams crammed into the Center Public School for the two-day event that began with round robin groups before the teams separated into three brackets of tournament play.
The Washburn Cardinals and the Wilton-Wing Miners entered the tournament in very different states.
The Cardinals were hit the most by graduation during the off-season, losing seven senior players; basically everyone that saw significant playing time last season.
The start of their year so far has been a little rocky with losses to Minot Ryan, Drake-Anamoose, and Grant County all in straight sets opening their schedule before entering the tournament on Friday.
The Cardinals didn’t fare well in the first stage of competition going without taking a single set in round-robin play; losing to Garrison-Max, Maple Valley, and Flasher in both sets for each.
