Washburn boys basketball begins the season

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

Coming off a season that was one game away from the state tournament, the Washburn boys basketball team has a large portion of its core still intact to make another run this year. The long road back to the regional championship began away from home this year, playing their first game in Steele against Kidder County before attending the McLean County Tournament in Garrison over the weekend. Washburn started their 2011-2012 record off with a win against the Kidder County Pirates 47-27. The game was dominated by Brett Schreiner and his 24-point performance, setting himself up as one of the main go-to guys for the Cardinals this year. The McLean County tournament, on the other hand, didn’t go nearly so well for Washburn. The boys were matched up with the Mandaree Warriors in the first round on Thursday. The first quarter ended 14-12 in favor of the Cardinals, but it wouldn’t stay that close for much longer. For the remaining three quarters, the Warriors only scored three more baskets while Washburn kept hitting shots and adding to their lead.
