Washburn Cardinals district runner-up

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

The third seeded Washburn Cardinals came into the district tournament in good position to make it to the next round of the post-season. In fact, they came out of the weekend better than their district record would have expected them to. For the first time in nearly a decade, the Cardinals worked their way into the district championship game with wins over the Underwood Comets (67-61) and the Wilton-Wing Miners (63-47). However, they would meet their match against the Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky Trojans in the tournament’s final game, 21-54. In a rematch of a game that took place only a few weeks ago, the Cardinals took on the Comets in the first round. Both teams came out shooting and when it comes to shooting, you always think Jeff Rasmussen. Rasmussen put down three three-pointers in the first half, leading the Cardinals to an eight-point lead at halftime. A number of turnovers for Washburn let the Comets back into the game and started an all-out shooting free-for-all in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Camden Moran drilled a couple of three-pointers in response to Underwood baskets and kept the Cardinals on top.
