Washburn Cardinals downed in overtime by Beach

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

If the Washburn Cardinal football team needed a measure of both how far they’ve come and how much further they need to go before the playoffs, their game against the Beach Buccaneers on Friday would be the perfect measuring stick. Harassed all game long by Beach’s running game, the Cardinals tied up the game late in the fourth quarter to send it into overtime. In the end, the Buccaneers converted their 2-point conversion opportunity in overtime while the Cardinals were unable to accomplish the same and Washburn lost the thriller 34-36. The air attack was open for the Cardinals in the first half and they took full advantage of their speed in the wide receiver position, scoring the first touchdown of the game in the first quarter with a 32-yard pass from Jeff Rasmussen to Brett Schreiner.  The Buccaneers wouldn’t answer back until the game moved into the second quarter and Beach’s Jake Hardy scored his first of his five touchdowns on the night.
