Washburn claims Wildcats in OT

Jeff Brandt’s last home game as Washburn’s head coach proved to be one he’ll have sweet memories of, as his boys rallied in a four-minute overtime session to eliminate Center-Stanton from this year’s Region 5 Tournament 73-70 in a Tuesday night cliffhanger.

The one constant in this topsy-turvy March 1 affair was the performance of Dylan Eckel (23 points, 7 rebounds), whose slick post moves and allout grit gave the visiting team fits throughout the contest.

The blonde bomber went to work early by spinning, driving and pump-faking his way to the hoop on the game’s first two possessions, netting him a field goal and two free throws. Eckel also distinguished himself in the role of facilitator by connecting with Jack Retterath on an easy layup at 8-6, and later locating Parker Jacobson for the left corner 3-ball at 20-14 in the opening stages of the second quarter.
