Washburn doesn’t get four-peat

By Jarann Johnson, BHG News Service

Washburn coaches Dirk Hausauer and Kip Erickson had a patent pending recipe for winning entering last week’s Section 7  American Legion tournament. The duo led three teams to consecutive section crowns and hoped for a fourth crown and consecutive state tournament appearance. Washburn’s opening round game against Highway 21 was like a boxing prize fight. Both teams came out hard early, but the better team won. Sam Goos started at pitcher for Washburn against Highway 21 and started hot. He retired the first three batters he faced and Washburn turned to the offensive. Kirk Sailer hit a two-run double giving Washburn a 2-0 lead. Jesse Henke kept the offensive valve open with a single, making it 3-0. The Cardinals scored another run on a steal and led 4-0 after one complete inning. In the second inning Highway 21 showed that they had a strong chin and would need to be punched harder to go down. Brock Pittsley hit a one-run single, making the score 4-1. Pittsley’s hit started a rally that added two more runs, coming up one run short of tying the game.
