Washburn drops to 5-4

The Washburn Cardinals girls basketball team faced one of the toughest  defensive units in the state on Tuesday, January 6, as they welcomed undefeated Flasher to the Cardinals’ home floor.
Despite a determined effort, Washburn struggled to find consistent scoring opportunities and fell 42 to 22 to the Bulldogs in early January action.
Flasher entered the night ranked among the top teams in Division B Region 4 and backed that reputation with a disciplined defensive performance that forced Washburn into difficult shots and limited transition chances.
The Cardinals worked to generate ball movement and perimeter looks, but the Bulldogs’ length and on-ball  pressure made clean opportunities hard to come by throughout the contest.
Washburn’s scoring came from three players, led by junior guard Sadie Goven with 14 points. Goven knocked down shots both off the dribble and from spotup opportunities, keeping the Cardinals within reach for stretches of the first half.
Kesia Boeshans added 5 points, while Brooklyn Hetletved chipped in 3.
Head Coach Jarod Obering noted that the Cardinals’ offensive struggles were less about shot-making and more about maximizing possessions rather than conceding turnovers.
