Washburn girls earn strong District win
The Washburn Cardinals girls basketball team picked up an important district victory Jan. 22, edging New Salem-Almont 46-44 in a tightly contested matchup that came down to the final minutes.
The game was competitive from start to finish, with both teams trading runs and battling through physical possessions on both ends of the floor.
Washburn was able to do just enough defensively and at the free throw line late to hold off New Salem-Almont and secure the two-point win on its home court.
The Cardinals showed composure in a game that featured multiple lead changes, responding each time New Salem-Almont threatened to pull away.
Washburn’s defensive effort proved critical, particularly down the stretch, as the Cardinals forced key stops and limited second chance opportunities in the closing moments.
