Washburn girls start the season 1-1

With a potent combination of hard hitters and tall blockers, the Cardinal volleyball team has a promising future in the 2010 season, assuming the pieces fall into place. In their first week of action, Washburn got tested by Minot Ryan in an away game and Drake-Anamoose at home in their season-opening games. On the road, the Cardinals kept close during two of the sets against Minot Ryan, but never got over the edge, losing 3-0. Their first home game days later against Drake-Anamoose was another story as Washburn won the first set in a close battle, but then went on to outmatch Drake in the remaining two sets, winning 3-0. Although taking a loss up in Minot wasn’t the ideal result they were hoping for, Coach Williams saw positive results in the experience. "The girls played well overall, and it was a great match. We just found ourselves getting sloppy with our passing, and when that’s not working, our setting and hitting suffer," said Washburn Head Coach Stephanie Williams. "It was a great start to our season though; our serving was definitely our strong point in the night."
