Washburn hosts volleyball tournament

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

It was a down week for the Washburn Cardinals last week. They lost two games that weren’t as close as they would have liked, first to district opponent Underwood and then to regional powerhouse Shiloh Christian. Then on top of that, the team lost one of their biggest hitters in MiKayla Pfliiger who was sidelined by illness. Even with all that, they had a chance to end the week on a high note when they played host to the Washburn Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The Cardinals played flawlessly during the morning pool play session. Winning six straight sets, they dispatched everyone in their group 2-0: Sawyer, Tioga, and Garrison. They didn’t do as well in the bracket round later in the day, but well enough to take fourth place in a field of eight good teams. The Cardinals started the week on the road up in Underwood against the Comets. A first set 25-20 win for Washburn was a good start, but it didn’t translate going forward as Underwood took the next three 25-23, 25-17, 25-13 to deliver an unexpected loss to the Cardinals in the all-important district matchup. It wasn’t about to get better because Washburn had to come home and play regional favorite Shiloh Christian later in the week. The powerful Skyhawks led the game to a quick end in three straight sets 25-15, 25-8, and 25-15.
