Washburn over Wilton-Wing in volleyball rivalry game

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

Although their peers are playing on the same football team these days, both the Washburn and Wilton-Wing volleyball teams still face each other from opposite sides of the court. The two teams had their first meeting of the year last week. Both teams came into the night off of a win in their previous game; the Cardinals taking down the Underwood Comets 3-0 while the Miners similarly swept Central Prairie 3-0. However, in their game together, Washburn was playing at a higher level while the Miners struggled to string together quality rallies. In the end, it was the hard-hitting Cardinals that were the ones to continue their winning streak, beating Wilton-Wing in three straight sets. The first set was firmly in the hands of the hometown Cardinals from the first serve. A kill by MiKayla Pfliiger turned on the scoreboard and points by Cori Moberg and Spanky Clayton steadily put the Cardinals ahead. The Miners didn’t end up with a proper kill until Heidi Clausen found the opponent’s floor mid-way through the game, making it 14-6. With the points adding up almost exclusively in their favor, several kills by Moberg helped finish the first set at 25-9 for Washburn.
