Washburn thumps Garrison

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

There haven’t been many teams able to compete with the Washburn girls basketball team this year. The Cardinals, led by Senior Spanky Clayton, added a couple more games to their win column in the waning days of January, bringing them to 10 wins on the season thus far, but they also saw an end to a five-game winning streak last week. Coming off a long week without games after a 60-50 victory against Beulah on Jan. 17, the Cardinals returned to action on Jan. 24 to beat the Garrison Troopers out of the gate and cruised to an easy 52-24 district victory. However, the Cardinals played state-ranked Grant County on Friday and were handed a 50-44 loss against the Coyotes. Another big night from Spanky Clayton with 27 points helped the Cardinals keep a double-digit lead for most of the game against Beulah. Despite a size advantage favoring the Miners, Washburn’s quicker team found ways through the forest and to the goal. “Beulah is a very big team and we were able to do very well against them, even with foul trouble the kids did very well fighting through adversity,” said Washburn Girls Head Coach Keith Jacobson.
