After some discussion with Wilton Public Schools about a co-op, Washburn has elected to instead start its own junior varsity softball team, premiering in the spring of 2016.

At the Washburn Public Schools November board meeting, members discussed the best option for incorporating softball into the school. The school approached Wilton board members earlier this fall about a possible co-op with the Wilton-Wing softball team, which would have likely meant rotating practices between the cities.

Board director Courtney Seiler said that 14 girls from Washburn had said that they would definitely join the team. Twelve said they would join if there was a co-op with Wilton-Wing, which currently has about 20 girls on the roster for next year. Seiler said she recommended that Washburn form its own JV softball team, starting in the spring of 2016.

"Any time you can have your own program, that’s always what’s best for our kids," Chairman Rick Tweeten said.
