With the girls getting first dibs on the basketball court this season, they kicked off the 2014-2015 basketball season with the annual McLean County Shootout over the weekend.

Six of the seven teams making up District 10 were in attendance for the two-day event that brought in a variety of teams from across the state to compete.

With the first day of the shootout taking place in two locations, both Washburn and Wilton-Wing's Friday night was spent in the Underwood High School gym, before Saturday brought everyone together in Turtle Lake for nine straight hours of basketball action spread out across six games.

The Washburn Cardinals are once again looking to do a lot with a little. Dressing only nine players for the varsity team to begin the season, they are relying on quality over quantity to raise them above their opponents.

Carrying over their ability from last season to hold teams to manageable numbers, the test for this Cardinal team will be their ability to elevate their offensive numbers to take advantage of their defensive prowess.

With the first week in the books, Washburn is off to a promising start at 2-1.
