Washburn wins section title by a narrow margin

When the game is on the line, there are few people American Legion coach Kip Erickson is more comfortable having enter the batter’s box than Brett Schreiner. The Washburn player was greeted with bases loaded and only one out in the seventh inning of the Section 7 Tournament Championship. Pressure like that is tough for anybody to handle, especially since Schreiner is one of only two Post 12 players still eligible to play Babe Ruth. The 16-year-old batted in the winning run then narrowly escaped the double play for Washburn’s first section title in four years. "I could have sacrifice bunted with Brett Schreiner but he was hitting real well so I thought let him go after it. When he beat that out it was a game winner for us," Erickson said. Washburn’s Legion team went to state last in 2006 but lost out after the first two games. Erickson said this year’s group is hoping to improve upon that last appearance starting with a win against LaMoure at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The double elimination state tournament runs July 28-Aug. 1 in Grafton.
