Wilton Lady Miners succumb to Trojans

By Brenda L. Shelkey

In the first game of district play outside last week’s McLean County Tournament, the Lady Miners could almost feel a win at their fingertips. They were up against the Turtle Lake-Mercer Trojans on their home court for the second time within the week. The Miners knew that the Trojans might be over-confident after the 45-35 win over the Miners in the first round of the tournament. But the Miners came onto the floor last Tuesday evening exuding confidence and a determination to win. And it almost seemed within grasp. In the first half, everything the Miners did was right. They broke the Trojan press, executed their plays offensively and defensively, fed Alanna Smith the ball, then watched as she sank jump shot after jump shot, all while the Trojans looked on, to the frustration of their coach. The Miners led 12-3 after the first quarter and 22-13 at the half. The Miners couldn’t seem to miss and the Trojans couldn’t get the lead out of their feet, despite their height advantage. In the first half, Smith contributed 16 points and Sammie St. Claire added six for the Miners.
