Wilton-Wing carries the night against Washburn

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

Of all the activities that Washburn and Wilton compete against one another in, there is little debate over which sport that rivalry is most intense: basketball. On Thursday another page in that book was written during a double-header at the Wilton school gym. An impressive performance by the lady Miners led by a 24-point night by Sammie St. Claire downed the lady Cardinals 46-35 and a consistently close game between the guys ended 68-62 in favor of the Miners as well. In a dose of chivalric scheduling, the girls played the first varsity game of the night and it didn’t start out well for the team that eventually went on to win the game. Allison Weisgarber put the Cardinals on top early with a pair of baskets and a long three-pointer. Wilton-Wing’s only points of the first quarter came from Sydney Fox, leaving a 9-2 deficit going into the second. The tables turned pretty dramatically at that point as the Miners came out and put down 14 points before the half while Washburn only managed two, allowing Wilton-Wing a 15-11 halftime lead.
